How to tell your children about your divorce

The decision to get divorced is rarely an easy one, and when you have children, it can be even harder. Like most parents, your priority is helping your children adjust to the transition in their life. This begins with finding the ideal way to tell your children about the upcoming split.

Here are some tips on how to talk to your children about divorce.

Plan ahead

The conversation with your children is likely to be very emotional, and you will want to make sure you say the right things to minimize the confusion and stress. Plan out what you want to say ahead of the discussion. You should also try to anticipate what questions your children may ask and how you can best answer their queries.

Consider the timing

You should wait to tell your children about a separation or divorce until you and your spouse are certain of your decision.

Talk to your children together

Though not always possible or advisable, you and your partner should consider sitting down together to talk to your children. This shows your children that you are still partners when it comes to parenting.

Emphasize consistency and stability

Perhaps the scariest part of divorce for children, and even adults, is not knowing how and when things will change. You should be honest with your children about changes they can expect, but make sure to emphasize those things that will stay the same.

No matter how the conversation goes, your children are likely to experience strong feelings about the announcement. Support and reassurance can go a long way to soothing their worries.
