On a recent afternoon in Iberia Parish two people were going about their business. One, an 81-year-old woman, was driving a pickup truck. The other, a 37-year-old man, was riding his motorcycle. Their paths crossed in a tragic manner at an intersection on LA Highway 87 where they were both involved in one of the week’s horrific car accidents.
The pickup was traveling west on Westwood Dr. toward LA 87. The motorcycle was about to enter the intersection of LA 87 and Westwood Dr. The driver of the pickup reportedly failed to obey a stop sign and collided with the motorcycle in the intersection. Both drivers were properly restrained and wearing appropriate safety equipment.
The motorcycle rider was transported to an area hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the pickup was uninjured and has been cited for failing to yield the right of way. It is unknown if drug or alcohol impairment was a factor in the crash. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
People seldom consider that heading out to run errands could be their last act on earth but tragic car accidents continue to cut short lives on Louisiana roadways. Police and other safety officials warn people to drive defensively, always wear a seat belt and not to drive if impaired in any way. In spite of these warnings, accidents continue to happen. If a person is injured in a car accident, he or she may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney to ascertain what legal options may be available.
