5 dangers other vehicles pose to motorcycles

On Behalf of | Aug 14, 2019 | Firm News

Riding a motorcycle is exhilarating partly because of the danger that comes with such an activity. Even if you always wear your helmet and proper riding gear, and follow all of the traffic laws, a motorcycle wreck can still have catastrophic results. While bad weather and bad roads can play a large part in motorcycle accidents, many of the dangers you face while out for a ride come directly from the cars and trucks you share the road with.

Since staying safe should be a priority every time you climb on your bike, it is not only important to practice safe riding techniques but to also understand where the greatest dangers lay. Here are a few ways that other vehicles are dangerous to motorcycle riders.

Oncoming drivers

One of the biggest dangers that motorcycle riders face is from oncoming traffic. One of these drivers might be on the phone, finishing a breakfast taco or simply not paying attention. And, it only takes a second of inattention to drift into another lane. Even just being clipped by a car that crosses the line is enough to cause a motorcycle rider serious injuries.

Drivers waiting to make a turn

Intersections are extremely dangerous for motorcycle riders, mostly due to cars and trucks that are waiting to make a left turn. Unfortunately, drivers often turn directly in front of motorcycles as if they don’t exist. While many riders have had a close call with one of these drivers, there are far too many that have not been so lucky.

Dooring accidents

Have you ever been riding through downtown Lafayette when a car parked on the side of the road suddenly throws open a door into traffic? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. When bikers collide with these doors, they are referred to as “dooring” accidents and can be catastrophic for motorcyclists.

Vehicles changing lanes

Too many drivers have the tendency to change lanes without checking their blind spots and making sure the next lane is clear. Unfortunately, motorcycles usually fit perfectly in a driver’s blind spot, no matter the size of the motor vehicle. This makes riding in a lane next to a car or truck perilous for most motorcycle riders.

Drivers to the rear

Drivers that are behind you also pose a threat when you are riding your motorcycle. Like the oncoming traffic, these drivers might not be paying enough attention to the road and a motorcycle could be almost completely invisible even if it is only a few feet ahead. The result is usually a rear-end accident that can have devastating consequences for the motorcycle rider.

While understanding the above hazards can help you stay safe the next time you go out for a ride, it is not always possible to avoid a collision with a reckless or negligent driver. If you have been the victim of a motorcycle accident, you might be able to file a claim for the compensation you deserve for your injuries and other damages.
