Impaired driving often leads to car accidents

A mother and her two young sons are recovering today in an area hospital after their vehicle was hit head-on. Authorities said that an impaired driver died after he crossed the center line and crashed into the family's vehicle at 7:15 a.m on Feb. 20. In Louisiana, car accidents involving impaired drivers can happen at any time of the day, even during the morning commute.

The accident victims suffered what were described as moderate injuries.  An information officer from the Walker Police Department said the offending driver failed to negotiate a curve just west of a local high school.  Upon impact the passenger compartment of the man's vehicle caught fire. Police were able to contain the fire until rescue units arrived on the scene.

Police reported that based on their investigation the man was impaired, and he may also have been speeding when the accident occurred. They are awaiting receipt of toxicology reports. Louisiana police pointed out that this accident happened early in the morning and reinforced that motorists should remain vigilant and be alert for impaired and distracted drivers at all times.

Fatal accidents are always upsetting, and a tragedy for everyone involved, and this one is no exception. This mother and her two sons will suffer long-term medical problems along with pain and suffering. Lost wages and mounting hospital bills may also be a concern. Those who have been injured in car accidents due to the fault of another party may benefit from speaking with a personal injury attorney. In Louisiana, a lawyer can pursue the estate and insurance company of the deceased driver for the recovery of monetary damages incurred due to the driver's negligence.
